Sanctum (2020)

I've long been inspired by movies and the way that their directors visually tell stories.  The technique known as mise-en-scène, where everything in the frame is carefully placed to add context that helps form narratives, is also adopted by many photographers.  Most famous of these are Jeff Wall and Gregory Crewdson, whose grand and complex compositions demand closer inspection where the audience see and place importance on a variety of contextual signs.  

This piece explores family memories, nostalgia and generational connection, using a combination of portraiture and landscape genres.  Photography is unable to tell us more than about a single instant in time but can, as in this case, direct us to consider the passage of time, our mortality and how memories are carried forward embodied in visual documentation.
